Diabetes is a chronic condition that involves a high blood sugar level(hyperglycemia), due to the failure of the pancreas to produce enough insulin or the body failing to effectively utilize the insulin it produces to regulate the amount of sugar in the blood.

Diabetes is the commonest cause of blindness, a leading cause of kidney failure, and it is responsible for twice as many deaths as breast cancer and AIDS combined. As a result, millions of people are working to improve their diabetes management. The problem is that diabetes symptoms can be difficult to spot. Here are some of the early signs and symptoms of diabetes.

1. Frequent urination(polyuria) and increased thirst(polydipsia). The excess sugar in the blood can cause the kidneys to work overtime to remove the sugar from the blood and hence the frequent urination which in turn leads to loss of water and dehydration. This loss of water and dehydration causes increased thirst.

2. Extreme Hunger and fatigue. In a diabetic state, the body can't convert the food you eat into energy due to the lack of insulin or insulin resistance. This leads to a lack of energy and extreme hunger.

3. blurred vision. This is caused by the high levels of sugar in the blood which can cause swelling of the eye lens leading to blurry vision.

4. Other symptoms include: unintentional weight loss, slow wound healing, numbness and tingling in the hands and feet, fruity breath smell, swelling of the feet, flu-like symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and loss of consciousness
